Oh holy hell, I can't believe I found this! I have this Dragon Magazine (back when, you know, it still existed) and let me tell you, this cover definitely made me stop and stare for a good five minutes. This REALLY nails the horrors of the illithiad race, how downright scary and cruel mindflayers are by their very nature and it still gives me creepy-crawlies to see it. It was pretty much this image that made me sympathize for all the classes/races out there bent on destroying mindflayers. You sir, are a master.
The illithid looks so evil, and I love the way its claws are grasping the shoulders of his victim.
I don't think I've seen anyone else showing mind flayer tentacles going into a mouth before, but I think it makes it look more like the illithid has grabbed any part of the head it can get to to suck the victim up into its maw.
I always did have a soft spot for illithids. ^_^ Your painting is thoroughly beautiful. I absolutely adore that those shades of yellow, green, and purple are all used together in a painting, even if the purples are more sparingly just at the tips of his appendages. And you've managed to capture just the right expressions of evil and absolute terror on the subjects. Lovely work! Things like this are why I you in the first place.
Blah... if I were an Illithid, I would only slurp on bald people... imagine having to work your way through patches of hair... they would stick in your throat. do you think they cough up hairballs occasionally?
Great work though, although the mouth of the victim seems to be open a bit too much... perhaps a hairball problem himself?
omg...noticed it straight away. An Illithid. I made a female one who used a disguise spell to appear extremely sexy to other men just to do the kinda thing you painted. LOL...crazy coolness. She had the Bag of Infinity and held an undead dire shark the flies in there...can't believe the Dungeon Master let me get away with that...lol....you prolly didn't want to hear that crap. ^_^;;; Good painting, btw.
